WHAT ARE WORRY BEADS?
Also known as Komboloi (aka. Worry Beads), these beads are used for letting go of stress and worries as one bead moves deliberately towards the other. The pleasure of the action and the clicking noise of the beads turns the overall performance in an easy motion that is reported to help ease tension.
In modern times the komboloi is not designed for religious or ceremonial purposes but rather for fun and relaxation. There are many different ways to use worrying beads and everyone finds a unique routine that works just for them. Some people spin the beads in their hands. Others choose to count the beads over and over. There is no right or wrong way. The goal is simply to use the beads to defuse stress and calm the nerves.
Worry beads have several uses in Greek culture, including:
- relaxation
- enjoyment
- passing the time
- as an amulet
- to guard against bad luck
- used by people who wish to limit smoking
- as a mark of power and social prestige (This is especially true in the case of expensive worry beads made of silver or amber).
